What defines social media engagement?

Simply having a Twitter or Instagram or TikTok account isn’t enough. You have to spend time on the platform, exploring content, reacting to content, and posting your own content.

If you find this daunting, consider scheduling posts to go out at certain times. Look at the metrics and see optimal times to share your content based on your followers.

Make time each week to go through each account you have. Reach out to your new followers. Explore hashtag you use and find new content to engage with.

True engagement will vary from person to person, account to account, platform to platform. Most importantly, it means you have to like, retweet, tag, comment, and scroll and scroll and scroll. Be sincere in your contributions. Retweet and repost things that matter to you. Genuine engagement from you goes much further than canned responses.

Do you have a follower that reacts positively to everything you post? Follow them back and like a few of their posts. Is there a publishing company or platform that you’ve been eyeing for a while? Give them a follow too and comment on their posts. Fellow author in a similar genre whose work you really enjoy? It should seem obvious what you need to do.

Algorithms are complex and are difficult to trick. If you aren’t putting enough time into your social media(s) of choice, it will directly reflect on how much your account(s) are shown to others. Engagement is a two-way street.
