You’ve got your website, social media account(s), and your newsletter. You are a rock star, author! But you’ve still got all these things you want to share with the world, but aren’t sure how. That’s where a blog comes into play.
A blog is a versatile tool for you to share your thoughts in a medium ish length format that you can tailor to be thematic if you so choose. Think of your blog as an extension of all of the other ways you present yourself online.
Maybe you have something you need to vent about but it doesn’t feel appropriate in your newsletter or is too long for a social media post? Blog it! Use your blog as a way to remove long walls of text from cluttering up other ways you share information with your audience. You don’t want to bog down your Instagram post with a short essay. Share it to your blog instead.
Your blog is a great way to share more about the person behind the book through writing updates, a day in the life, challenges you’re facing in your writing, and lessons you’ve learned. And you can always take some of the information from your blog post and tweak it to be a social media post or part of your newsletter.
Include parts of your blog in your newsletter with a link that directs them to the full post. Give them a short summary or a snippet to entice them to read the full story. Same with your social media account(s). Tell your followers that you uploaded a new blog post about X today and to give it a read!
Use your blog to support other authors through book recommendations. Even a “Here’s what I’m reading and my thoughts on it” is something that your audience might be interested in. You have so many options for how to use a blog, author!
Always keep it professional, author. A blog can absolutely be more conversational, but it is still you presenting your author self to the world, so take a step back and take a hard look at what you’re sharing before you post. It’s easy to get caught up, but you’re a professional first and foremost.
