Boom, Sizzle, Pop: Building Your Author Brand

What is an author brand and why is it important?

Your author brand is what makes you recognizable amongst your followers and peers. Think of all the branding that you instantly recognize just by color association. Quite a few, right? That could be you!

Branding at its most basic is a consistent color scheme and font choice(s) that align with your theme. Color is a powerful tool, especially on social media, so choose wisely. You want your aesthetic to reflect your writing, so your followers have an easy time making the connection.

Your branding is the visual reference of your author persona. It is how you stand out from other authors out there, so you want to make it count.

Do you write in the mystery genre? Consider creating a color scheme that evokes the vibe of your latest book. Pastels and bright colors may not be the correct choice. Is your latest series romance based in a seaside town? Pastels and ocean tones might be it!

Once you figure out the color scheme and font choice, consider creating a logo to go with it. Your logo functions as a snapshot of you, author. If you aren’t artistically inclined, you can hire a graphic designer to create one for you.

Don’t forget a tagline! Your tagline is a brief sentence (7 words or less) that encompasses what you’re all about, author. Boil down all your nuances and compress it, that’s your tagline. Don’t be afraid to ask friends and peers for help with this one, it can be tricky.

When you establish your author brand, you make yourself recognizable. Recognition is what we want. Be consistent across all platforms, including your website and newsletter, and you’ll see a difference.
