Sometimes, author, it can be so hard to focus. All you want to do is the exact opposite of what you’re supposed to be doing. I completely understand. However, there are some things you can do while distracted to still be a little bit productive.
Organizing or decluttering your workspace can be a great way to scratch that distraction itch. Sort through old notes, rearrange your space, organize and rename files on your computer, and tidy up clutter are all options for when you’re just not feeling writing.
Read a book or listen to an audiobook for inspiration and a brain reset. Sometimes when we’re trying hard to get ourselves on track, all we really need is a little reset in a different direction. Reading or listening to an audiobook is another fantastic choice that is very relevant to your work! A little inspiration can come from a new place.
Take a nature break and go for a walk. Maybe go and get a coffee at your local coffee shop. Leaving the comfort of our workspace is a great way to give yourself a break and a refuel.
Respond to emails and non social media messages. This is necessary, but sometimes tedious. Get into the groove and remember that these are your fans and potential connections. Give them all of your attention.
If everything else seems like too much and you really need a solid distraction, spend some time on social media. Now it might be really easy to just doom scroll, but try to engage with your followers. If you need a distraction break, set a timer for 30 minutes and scroll, comment, and like. If you find yourself on a roll and you’re getting great engagement, spend a little longer on the apps. It is, after all, part of building your author brand.
While distraction is necessary at times to help our brains take a break, don’t let your distractions lead you. Mini productivity is wonderful, but big productivity is what we’re aiming for. You have goals, author, don’t let them be pushed to the side.
