Newsletter Necessities

I’m so glad to hear you’re going to start a newsletter, author! Newsletters are truly underrated and a wonderful way to connect to hundreds and thousands (maybe even millions) of people in a different format than social media.

Newsletters are a more intimate form of communication. Think of them like you’re writing a long letter to your readers. You can customize your newsletter in any way you see fit as well. The possibilities are endless. But with that in mind, what are the necessary aspects of newsletters?

Your greeting is super important, author. It will be the first thing your subscribers read when they open the email. You want it to be warm, welcoming, and set the tone for the rest of the newsletter. Consider setting up your newsletter to greet each subscriber by name for an even more personalized connection.

Updates are the next most important aspect of your newsletter. It's probably the reason why most of your fans signed up. There are many different types of updates as well: personal updates, progress updates, book news, and more. There are so many things to update about.

Personal updates can include personal news like travel, moving, updates about your animals, inspiration about your current book, and what you’re currently reading. Progress updates could be: writing progress, writing milestones, upcoming books, etc. Consider sharing updates about in-person events like readings and signings, too. Book news is the key factor here. Considering sharing: sneak peeks, cover reveals, launch dates, pre-order information, and exclusive excerpts.

Another crucial aspect of your newsletter is your footer. Your footer must include the option to unsubscribe as well as links to your social media and ways to contact you. Don’t forget to include your brand and/or logo. You want that to be the last thing your subscribers see.

Everything from your greeting to your footer is up to you! Keep in mind these are just suggestions about the necessities and your newsletter is just that, yours. Do keep it professional and in line with your brand. And most importantly, have fun!
