Nosey News: Newsletter Dos and Don’ts

Alright author, you’re working on your newsletter. I know it can be overwhelming to get started, so here are some things to consider:

Do create a clean, easy to read layout. You don’t want to use 8 different script fonts in various colors. Don’t crowd your sections either, give them breathing room!

Don’t overwhelm your reader with content. Consider limiting yourself to a few sections to start with and go from there. If you have a lot of information you want to share for one newsletter, consider adding that extra information as a blog post and linking to it from your newsletter.

Do create a story or a theme for each newsletter. You can center it around news you want to share, or something that’s been on your mind. A cohesive plan will result in a well thought out newsletter versus one that’s held together with run on sentences.

Don’t reveal everything all at once! A little bit of mystery never hurt anyone. If you have a big reveal, hint at it a little at a time before going all in. You’ll be able to build anticipation and excitement with your readers.

Do include links to your website, social media accounts, and where to buy your books. Most people read email from their phone these days so it makes it even easier for you to direct them to follow you on other platforms.

But the most important thing? Have fun with your newsletter and be you. It’s your best and most direct form of contact with your audience. Leave them with little tidbits of your best self.
